Victoria Woodhull (September 23, 1838 - June 9, 1927) was an American suffragist described by Gilded Age newspapers as a leader of the American woman's suffrage movement in the 19th century. She became a colorful and notorious symbol for women's rights, free love, and labor reforms. Her role as a representative of these movements was powerful and controversial. She is probably most famous for her declaration to run for the United States Presidency in 1872. Alice Stokes Paul (January 11, 1885 - July 9, 1977) was an American suffragist leader. Along with Lucy Burns (a close friend) and others, she led a successful campaign for women's suffrage that resulted in the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1920. Shirley Chisholm November 30, 1924 - January 1, 2005) was a African-American politician, educator, and author. She was a Congresswoman, representing New York's 12th Congressional District for seven terms from 1969 to 1983. In 1968, she became the first black woman elected to Congress. On January 25, 1972, she became the first major-party black candidate for President of the United States and the first woman to run for the Democratic presidential nomination (Margaret Chase Smith previously ran for the Republican presidential nomination). She received 152 first-ballot votes at the 1972 Democratic National Convention. Sandra Day O'Connor (born March 26, 1930), American jurist and the first female Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. She served as a Supreme Court Justice from 1981 until her retirement from the Court in 2006. O'Connor was appointed by Republican President Ronald Reagan in 1981.
