A brief history. "National Disability Employment Awareness Month" was started by President Harry Truman and became Public Law 176 in 1945. Although it has undergone several date changes and name alterations, the month is still dedicated to promoting the employment and advancement of disabled workers.
The 20th anniversary of the ADA http://hr.blr.com/HR-topics/Discrimination/Disabilities-ADA/National/ is also coming up later this year on July 26.
August 2010 Disability Employment Statistics Released
In August 2010, the percentage of people with disabilities in the labor force was 22.0. By comparison, the percentage of persons with no disability in the labor force was 70.2.
The unemployment rate for those with disabilities was 15.6 percent, compared with 9.3 percent for persons with no disability, not seasonally adjusted.
